
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 28) — The stage is set for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup draw on April 29 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The 32 qualified countries will be divided into eight groups — Group A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H. Each group will consist of four teams.
But first, all nations have been distributed to eight pots based on the latest FIBA men’s world rankings.
Pot 1 – Philippines, Spain, USA, Australia
Pot 2 – France, Serbia, Slovenia, Lithuania
Pot 3 – Greece, Italy, Germany, Brazil
Pot 4 – Canada, Venezuela, Montenegro, Puerto Rico
Pot 5 – Iran, Dominican Republic, Finland, New Zealand
Pot 6 – China, Latvia, Mexico, Georgia
Pot 7 – Jordan, Japan, Angola, Ivory Coast
Pot 8 – Lebanon, Egypt, South Sudan, Cape Verde
To balance the groupings and geographical distributions, Pots 1, 3, 5, and 7 will feed Groups A, C, E, and G while Pots 2, 4, 6, and 8 will feed Groups B, D, F, and H.
Only one team from Africa, Americas, Asia and Oceania can be in a group while Europe can have a maximum of two in a group for having the most number of participants with 12.
The Philippines is placed in Group A as the host of the group and final phase.
USA is assigned in Group C after being selected by the Philippines to play in Manila.
Japan is placed in Group E as one of the host nations and has selected Slovenia which will be part of Group F.
Indonesia, though not qualified but will serve as of one the host countries, chose Canada which will be part of Group H.
Groups A and B will see action at the Smart Araneta Coliseum while Groups B and C will compete at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Groups E and F will clash at the Okinawa Arena in Japan, while Groups G and H will battle at the Indonesia Arena.
The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will run from August 25 to September 10.
