Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Archie Andrews and the entire gang from Riverdale got a fresh transformation in the hands of comic book artist Fiona Staples and writer Mark Waid.
Archie #1 was released on Wednesday (July 8).
On the cover of Archie #1, the first issue of the rebooted classic, Archie looked more like a cool jock in his denim hoodie and dark skinny jeans (Justin Bieber, is that you?) as he makes his way to Pop’s Soda Shoppe — compared to the freckle-faced geeky ginger fans saw when he was first launched back in 1941.
Other Archie #1 artworks reimagined by Staples showed Archie’s love interest Betty dressed in a cropped top paired with purple ripped jeans, while Archie’s best friend Jughead was still his usual self, scarfing down a hamburger.

The makeover came after Archie Comics publisher and CEO Jon Goldwater said in 2014 that it seemed that the company had been reprinting the same story for the past 20 years.
“In order to remain competitive and interesting, the company would need to do something to change the dynamic,” Goldman said.
Staples is also the artist for the comic book series Saga, while Waid is known for his work on Superman comics.
