Metro Manila, Philippines - The Visayas grid will be placed on yellow alert on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 5, amid thin power reserves.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said the yellow alert will be in effect from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

The NGCP said a total of 744 megawatts (MW) was unavailable to the grid after 12 plants have been on forced outage from April to August and six other power plants have been out since 2023.

There were also eight plants running on derated capacities, meaning there was a reduction in the maximum power output due to various reasons.

The NGCP said the available capacity in the Visayas grid was 2,889 MW and peak demand was 2,489 MW.

The Visayas grid services Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol, Negros Island, and Panay Island.

The NGCP said the Luzon and Mindanao grids are under normal condition.
