New UP Fighting Maroons recruit dies after collapsing in practice
Metro Manila, Philippines - Israel Friday, the new University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons recruit, died after collapsing during team practice on Tuesday, the UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development confirmed on Wednesday. He was 19 years old.
The 6-foot-10 Nigerian was immediately brought to a nearby hospital but died despite efforts from medical personnel to revive him.
The cause of death has yet to be determined.
Friday, a transferee from Centro Escolar University, starred for the Scorpions in the University and Colleges Athletic League.
UP said it is in close contact with Friday's family and is extending its full support during this difficult time.
Friday was supposed to sit out one year due to the residency rule before being eligible for the defending champions in UAAP Season 89.
