LIST: Protests for SONA 2025
Metro Manila, Philippines - Undeterred by rains, a number of progressive groups are set to take the streets on Monday, July 28, as President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA).
In an interview with NewsWatch Plus, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) said the demonstration aims to hold Marcos accountable for his unfulfilled promises over the last three years.
Mong Palatino, Bayan secretary general, said the effigy is called “Bongbong Mambubudol.” It features a twisted face of the president holding a magic hat – with a monster-like mural of US President Donald Trump at the back.
Groups will also call on Congress to initiate Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, which now hangs in the balance after the Supreme Court declared the case unconstitutional.
In step with tradition, Palatino said the effigy will either be burned or destroyed as a symbol of resistance against the administration.
Bayan is among the groups that will stage the main rally at 3pm dubbed the “People’s SONA” on Commonwealth Ave. in Quezon City.
A number of rallies leading up to the multi-sectoral protest will also take place.
Bayan Southern Tagalog and Kalikasan and Agham will stage separate protests in Tandang Sora, Quezon City at 7am and 9am, respectively.
Peasant groups from Central Luzon and the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas will storm near the Department of Agrarian Reform office in Quezon City at 9:30 am.
Labor group Kilusang Mayo Uno and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers will stage separate rallies at 11 am.
At 11:30, the group Health Alliance for Democracy will hold demonstrations in Tandang Sora.
Meanwhile, Bayan is also set to take the streets outside Metro Manila.
The group has scheduled protest actions in Baguio, Iloilo, Roxas, Capiz, Kalibo, Aklan, Bacolod, Tacloban, and Davao City.
