Metro Manila, Philippines - Signal No. 1 was raised over nine areas in Luzon due to Tropical Depression Crising on early Thursday morning, July 17, the state weather bureau reported.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) hoisted Signal No. 1 over Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, the northeastern portion of Aurora, Quirino, Kalinga, the eastern portion of Mountain Province, the eastern portion of Ifugao, the northeastern portion of Nueva Vizcaya, and Apayao.

PAGASA said heavy rains may be expected over Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, and Biliran due to “Crising” and the enhanced southwest monsoon, or habagat.

The bureau also warned residents in coastal areas in Cagayan and Isabela of minimal to moderate risk of storm surge.

It advised locals to stay away from the coast, cancel marine activities, and move to higher grounds.

“Crising” was last spotted 525 kilometers east of Juban, Sorsogon, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 km per hour and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

It is seen to intensify into a tropical storm on Thursday then into a severe tropical storm on Friday afternoon or evening before approaching northern Luzon.

PAGASA said “Crising” may make landfall over mainland Cagayan on Friday evening or early Saturday morning. The tropical cyclone could exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
