AFP chief: No coup under my watch
Metro Manila, Philippines - Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. on Wednesday rejected any speculation of a possible coup attempt, saying the military remains committed to the Constitution and the civilian chain of command.
“As long as I am Chief of Staff, a coup will not happen—not under my watch,” Brawner said, responding to renewed rumors of unrest within the AFP. “We will not be distracted by baseless talk or influenced by noise.”
The AFP chief also warned against efforts to sow discord and disinformation, emphasizing that undermining the armed forces could threaten the country’s stability.
“To those stirring disunity, this is a reminder: do not spread doubt among those who defend our democracy,” he said. “Discrediting the military weakens a pillar meant to protect us all.”
Brawner called on the public to approach matters involving national security with caution and discernment, particularly on platforms where misinformation spreads easily.
“Let’s not become enemies within our own nation. Let’s be mindful of how we use our words and platforms,” he said.
Last year, former President Rodrigo Duterte called on the military to “correct the fractured governance” of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., triggering political tensions and fueling speculation of possible unrest in the run-up to the 2025 midterm elections.
Military officials have since repeatedly assured the public of their loyalty to the Constitution and non-intervention in political affairs.
