UAAP: UP exacts revenge on UST for solo second
Metro Manila, Philippines - The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons scored a payback 89-88 victory over the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers in the UAAP Season 88 men's basketball tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Harold Alarcon carried the Fighting Maroons on his shoulders, highlighted by a clutch turnaround jumper that gave the Diliman-based squad the one-point edge with 24.3 seconds remaining in the final period. He finished with 24 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Collins Akowe had the Growling Tigers' last possession to steal the win but he turned the ball over with 3.6 seconds left in the match. He led UST with 26 points and 16 rebounds.
Rey Remogat added 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists for UP, which improved to 7-3 for solo second in the team standings.
Meanwhile, the Growling Tigers suffered their fourth straight loss, dropping to 5-5 for a triple tie for fourth with the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles and Adamson University Soaring Falcons.
The Fighting Maroons hope to extend their hot streak against the winless University of the East Red Warriors on Nov. 8 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila, while UST tackles the Far Eastern University Tamaraws on Nov. 9 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
