Wind Signal No. 4 lifted as ‘Paolo’ weakens, dumps rains in Luzon

Metro Manila, Philippines - The state weather bureau has lifted Wind Signal No. 4 as “Paolo” (international name: Matmo) weakened into a severe tropical storm on Friday, Oct. 3, while triggering rains that could go into the weekend.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised rainfall alerts in most of the Luzon island group.

In its 5 p.m. update, PAGASA said wind signals are raised in the following areas as “Paolo” packed 110 kilometers per hour (kph) winds and gusts of up to 165 kph:

+ Signal No. 3 - Ilocos Sur, La Union, the southwestern portion of Abra, the western portion of Kalinga, the western portion of Mountain Province, the western portion of Ifugao, and Benguet

+ Signal No. 2 - the southern portion of Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, the rest of Abra, the rest of Kalinga, the rest of Mountain Province, the rest of Ifugao, the western portion of Isabela, the northwestern portion of Quirino, the northern and central portions of Nueva Vizcaya, and the northernmost portion of Nueva Ecija

+ Signal No. 1 - rest of Ilocos Norte, Apayao, Batanes, mainland Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, the rest of Isabela, the rest of Quirino, the rest of Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, the rest of Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, and the northern portion of Quezon including Polillo Islands

The agency listed rainfall alerts until Saturday afternoon:

+ Red rainfall warning (over 200 millimeters) - La Union and Benguet

+ Orange rainfall warning (100-200 millimeters) - Ilocos Sur, Pangasinan, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Zambales, and Bataan

+ Yellow rainfall warning (50-100 millimeters) - Ilocos Norte, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Quirino, and Aurora

The storm’s outer rain bands will bring strong- to gale-force gusts over Bataan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Bicol, Panay Island, Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.

PAGASA said the storm may exit the monitoring area by Saturday morning.
