Marcos congratulates Takaichi Sanae as Japan’s first female prime minister
Metro Manila, Philippines - President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. congratulated Takaichi Sanae on her historic election as Japan’s first female prime minister, calling it a “demonstration of Japan’s firm democratic advocacy” and a reflection of the country’s commitment to progress and representation.
“Congratulations to Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae on her historic election as Japan’s first female prime minister. Her assumption demonstrates Japan’s firm democratic advocacy, and reflects the country’s commitment to progress and representation,” Marcos said in a statement.
He said he looks forward to working with Takaichi.
“I look forward to working with her in commemorating the 70th Anniversary of [PH-Japan] diplomatic ties in 2026, and in deepening the [Philippine-Japan] Strengthened Strategic Partnership for the peace and prosperity of our peoples,” Marcos added.
Takaichi, often referred to as Japan’s “Iron Lady” and a protégé of the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, secured a simple majority in both houses of Japan’s parliament, becoming the country’s fourth leader in five years. It was her third attempt at clinching the post.
Takaichi was sworn in as Japan’s 104th prime minister on Tuesday evening.
The new leader faces mounting challenges, including addressing high inflation, rising living costs, and growing discontent among voters - some of whom have shifted support toward far-right parties amid dissatisfaction with mainstream politics.
