Metro Manila, Philippines – President Bongbong Marcos appointed Vice Admiral Rommel Supangan as the new Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) commandant on Monday, Oct. 19, pledging continued support to strengthen maritime security capabilities and protect sovereign rights.
Marcos made the commitment during the PCG Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony at Pier 13, South Harbor, Manila, where Supangan succeeded retiring Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan.
“Across our waters, the PCG works alongside other maritime agencies to safeguard our people, protect our maritime interests, and uphold our sovereign rights,” Marcos said.
The president reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the Coast Guard’s operational capabilities, maritime security readiness and international cooperation as the agency faces increasingly complex challenges at sea.
He highlighted the PCG’s role in responding to maritime emergencies, assisting fishermen and protecting coastal communities.
“The Philippine Coast Guard is, in many ways, the face of the Filipino at sea,” Marcos said.
“When a storm happens, a vessel gets into trouble, the PCG responds. When our fishermen need assistance, the Coast Guard answers the call,” he added.
The president said the public had come to rely on the coast guard because of its consistent response to emergencies and its commitment to maritime safety.
“Truly, the entire nation has come to rely on our Coast Guard because it shows up, again and again, to do its duty,” he said.
New leadership
Supangan, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Marilag Class of 1995, has more than three decades of service.
He previously led the Coast Guard Fleet, Coast Guard District Palawan, and Marine Environmental Protection Command.
His experience includes maritime operations, environmental protection, and strategic affairs.
Marcos expressed confidence that Supangan would continue the modernization and capability-building efforts.
“I am confident that you will build on the accomplishments of your predecessor, further strengthening the Philippine Coast Guard with the full support of this administration,” the president said.
Marcos also paid tribute to generations of coast guard personnel who have served the country throughout the agency’s 125-year history.
The president called on coast guard personnel to uphold courage, discipline and professionalism under their new leadership.
