Metro Manila, Philippines – The UAAP Basketball Commissioner’s Office has suspended National University (NU) assistant coach Paul Du from all basketball-related activities – both 5-on-5 and 3×3 for all divisions – for the remainder of Season 89 following an incident involving University of Santo Tomas (UST) assistant coach Arsenio Dysangco.
The suspension stemmed from an incident during the post-game handshake line after the women’s basketball game between NU and UST on Oct. 10 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
According to the UAAP, Du delivered a forceful elbow to Dysangco which caused the UST deputy coach to fall to the floor and require medical attention.
UST won the match in a blowout fashion, 90-66, to keep its unblemished record. NU, meanwhile, is trailing at second place tied with Far Eastern University in the team standings with a 2-1 win-loss slate.
The UAAP said the suspension takes effect immediately and will remain in place until the official end of the season.
The commissioner’s office also said there may be additional sanctions imposed by the UAAP Board.
NU can appeal the decision.
