Metro Manila, Philippines – AirAsia Philippines has reported an increase in bomb joke incidents this year, warning passengers that remarks about explosives, even when intended as a joke, could lead to flight delays, and result in denied boarding and possible criminal penalties.
The airline said Thursday, Oct. 8, that its security operations team had recorded five bomb joke cases as of October 2026 compared with two in 2025.
The incidents occurred at check-in counters, boarding gates, and on board aircraft before departure.
AirAsia said any statement suggesting the presence of bombs or explosive devices is treated as a security concern, regardless of whether the passenger intended it as a joke.
Such remarks can trigger more security procedures, including passenger and baggage searches, potentially disrupting flight schedules and inconveniencing other travelers.
“Our operations have always been anchored in keeping operational reliability and safety. However, any perceived risk necessitates rigorous compliance measures that impact the entire passenger experience as well as the airline’s operational efficiency,” AirAsia Philippines President and General Manager Anna Victoria Lu said.
“Previous incidents serve as a reminder for guests to continuously learn and remain committed to keeping every flight safe and comfortable for everyone,” she added.
Passengers involved in bomb joke incidents may be denied boarding or removed from their flights and referred to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group.
AirAsia said offenders could also be blacklisted from future flights, subject to the airline’s procedures and an assessment of each case.
Under Presidential Decree 1727, commonly known as the anti-bomb joke law, knowingly communicating false information about bombs or explosives under circumstances covered by the law may result in criminal penalties.
Those convicted may face imprisonment of up to five years, a fine of up to ₱40,000, or both, at the court’s discretion.
