3 students killed, several injured in South Cotabato school shooting – DSWD

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said three students were killed and several others were injured in a shooting at Banga National High School in South Cotabato on Friday, Sept. 18.

It said it is still confirming the actual number of injured people, while personnel from its regional field office were deployed to assist the injured students in the hospital.

Authorities have yet to confirm if the suspect was a student and if he took his life.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) said the shooting took place at around 1 p.m. It confirmed the fatalities and those injured.

“The PNP is currently verifying the full details of the incident, including the identities and conditions of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” it said.

It added that the police will continue to coordinate with concerned authorities in the investigation.

“The public is urged to refrain from relying on or sharing unverified reports, photos, or videos involving those affected,” the police said.

In a statement, the Department of Education said it is extending necessary assistance to those affected.

“We are closely coordinating with the Schools Division Office, Regional Office, local authorities, and law enforcement to verify the circumstances and provide necessary assistance,” it said.

“We urge everyone to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified information as authorities continue their investigation,” it added.

It was the third deadly school shooting after similar incidents in Tacloban and Zamboanga cities.

This is a developing story.
