EJ Obiena soars to best jump this year, bags gold in Poland

Metro Manila, Philippines – EJ Obiena continued his impressive European run after capturing the gold medal and setting a new meet record at the Golden Sand in Międzyzdroje, Poland on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The two-time Filipino Olympian cleared a season-best 5.91 meters to claim his third consecutive and eighth overall gold this year.

This was the first time Obiena cleared the 5.90-meter mark since reaching the exact height in the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he narrowly missed out on nabbing the bronze medal.

Joining Obiena were Qatar’s Seifeldin Abdelsalam and USA’s Cole Walsh who beat Saudi Arabia’s Hussain Al Hizam via countback, clearing 5.75 meters and 5.70 meters for silver and bronze, respectively.

Currently ranked No. 13 in the world, Obiena is aiming to get back in the top 10 through his sensational performances so far.

This victory is a great buildup for Obiena who is vying for a spot in the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Hungary and the 20th Asian Games in Japan where he will be defending his title. Both are scheduled for next month.
