Metro Manila, Philippines – The Office of the Ombudsman has filed 14 counts of graft with the Sandiganbayan against a party-list representative over his alleged financial interest in government contracts awarded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
According to Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano, USWAG Ilonggo Rep. James “Jojo” Ang Jr. maintained a stake in a construction firm that secured ₱214 million in DPWH contracts while he was a member of Congress.
The firm reportedly received nearly ₱199 million in payments for the projects.
“The Constitution is clear: no lawmaker may be financially interested in a government contract during his term,” said Clavano.
The charges stem from the alleged violation of Section 3(h) of Republic Act No. 3019, or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
Ang is the first sitting member of the House of Representatives to face criminal charges in connection with the alleged multibillion-peso flood control scam.
