Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor lead Spielberg’s alien thriller ‘Disclosure Day’

Metro Manila, Philippines – Academy Award-nominated actress Emily Blunt and Emmy winner Josh O’Connor take center stage in Steven Spielberg’s latest science fiction film Disclosure Day, which explores humanity’s reaction to proof of extraterrestrial life.

The film, opening in Philippine cinemas on June 10, follows weather reporter Margaret Fairchild, played by Blunt, and cybersecurity expert Dr. Daniel Kellner, portrayed by O’Connor, as they uncover secrets tied to alien contact hidden by a shadowy government agency known as WARDEX.

Spielberg reunited with longtime collaborator David Koepp for the screenplay. Koepp said the director wanted the film’s lead characters to feel grounded and relatable despite the larger-than-life premise.

“Steven was very insistent on making our heroes and all the characters as rich and complex as possible,” Koepp said.

“Margaret and Daniel are, to some degree, special ‘chosen one’ heroes, but Steven was adamant that they should always be relatable while always remaining interesting,” he added.

In the film, Blunt’s character is a local television meteorologist whose search for meaningful journalism leads her into a dangerous conspiracy involving extraterrestrial secrets.

For the role, Blunt reportedly studied Korean and Russian and worked closely with Spielberg to help create an original alien language used in the movie.

Meanwhile, O’Connor plays a cybersecurity consultant with a criminal past who turns against WARDEX and attempts to expose the agency’s alleged cover-up involving non-human lifeforms.

O’Connor recalled immediately accepting Spielberg’s invitation to join the project.

“I was finishing up press for Challengers when my agent called and asked: ‘What are you doing tomorrow? Might you be free for a meeting?’” O’Connor said.

“They said: ‘It’s Steven Spielberg.’ I was like, ‘Yep, I’m free,’” he added.

The actor said he was immediately drawn to the relationship between the film’s two lead characters.

“They are two very different people who do not know each other at all, but there is something bringing them together,” O’Connor said.

The film also stars Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo.
