Christiane Amanpour to leave CNN in June 2027 after 43 years

Metro Manila, Philippines  – Veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour, one of CNN’s most prominent international correspondents and anchors, announced Monday, Oct. 19, that she will leave the network in June 2027 after 43 years.

The 68-year-old journalist, who has covered some of the world’s biggest conflicts and interviewed influential global leaders, confirmed her decision in a statement shared with CNN employees.

“After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!” Amanpour said in a statement according to CNN.

Amanpour, CNN’s chief international anchor, has hosted her self-titled interview program on CNN International since 2009.

According to CNN, she will reduce the program’s frequency to once a week beginning January 2027 before it ends in May. She will continue reporting and traveling for the network until her departure in June.

Amanpour had already scaled back her hosting duties in January 2025, appearing on the program only a few days each week.

Four decades of international journalism

Amanpour built her career covering wars, humanitarian crises and major political developments across the world.

She reflected on assignments that took her from the First Gulf War to conflicts in Bosnia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran.

“From my very first big exciting assignment covering the First Gulf War, to the horrors of the Bosnian War, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Iran and all the points in between, it’s the teams and the camaraderie that counted so much,” Amanpour said.

She credited her colleagues and field crews for their commitment to reporting facts and documenting the human impact of conflicts.

The journalist said their collective efforts allowed CNN to report on events around the world without fear or favor.

CNN Chairman Mark Thompson acknowledged Amanpour’s decision in a memorandum to employees, describing her as one of the most respected journalists in the industry.

“Like so many CNNers who will hear the news today, I’m very sorry to see her go, but I’ve come to accept that this is the right time for her, both personally and professionally,” Thompson said.
Thompson thanked Amanpour for her decades of journalism, loyalty and friendship, adding that the network would celebrate her contributions before her departure.

What’s next for Amanpour?

Amanpour said she looks forward to pursuing new projects after leaving CNN, although she did not announce specific plans.

Her PBS program, Amanpour & Company, will also conclude in December 2026.

She will continue hosting The Ex Files, a podcast with her former husband, Jamie Rubin.

Despite her departure, Amanpour expressed continued support for CNN and its commitment to independent reporting. She ended her statement with a principle that has defined her approach to journalism:

“Remember: always be truthful, not neutral.”
