This power-saving app could be the app of the future

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The “Program The Future: The Accenture Technology Campus Challenge 2015” competition named on Friday (July 31) the teams from two categories who will bring home the coveted App of the Future and Game of the Future awards.

From at least 70 entries of mobile apps and games, the Team UCL from the University of the Philippines Diliman has emerged as the winner for the App of the Future category for their home automation assistant mobile application, Irina. Team Technosaur from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila bagged the award for the Game of the Future category.

Romelio Tavas Jr., Jasper Riane Mendoza, Randy Beros, and Jake Sabandal of Team UCL explained to CNN Philippines Digital how the Irina app works.

Irina automates appliances at home by incorporating the concept of Internet of Things, a scenario where all objects have network connectivity and allowing each object to send and receive data through the Internet.

Aside from the mobile application, the four members of Team UCL also created a special smartplug that can be controlled by the app.

Through Irina, power users can monitor their energy consumption in real time and automate the usage.

“I think this would help Filipinos in such a way that they will be able to save their electricity consumption. Another thing is that they wouldn’t be shocked with their electricity bill,” Tavas said.

The winning team said that that the Irina app and the smartplug are currently in the process of being patented.

Game of the Future

Aside from Team UCL, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila’s Team Technosaur bagged the Game of the Future title with their mobile game, Modern Sweeper.

Princess Joy S. Sicat, Paulo Santiago, Fenella Mae Bagalayo, and Marco Francisco created the winning game that aims to create awareness about the methods on how to prevent and fix the problem of the depreciating Mother Nature.

The game has four main focus points: water pollution, land pollution, air pollution, and light pollution.

The Modern Sweeper also has five exciting mini games: The Swipe It, The Earth Hour, The Cleaning Rush, The Recycle 101, and The Happy Earth.

Accenture’s Senior Managing Director for Technology Lead in the Philippines Ambe Tierro hopes that the creativity of the youth will help the country in terms of addressing and educating Filipinos of the society’s issues and solving it through the help of exciting apps and games.

She is also hopeful that the two teams’ victory is just the start for the bright future ahead of these students.

“If there is a need in the society and they can address it using technology, then they could do more creative things and really monetize their ideas,” she said.
