Zamboanga City (CNN Philippines) — Retailers of chicken products in Zamboanga City have confirmed a shortage of chicken since late last week in several markets.
Market vendors said that the shortage, which was confirmed by the Office of the City Veterinarian, was felt over the weekend right after Eid’l Fitr celebrations last Friday (July 17).
Prices of chicken have increased from P130 per kilo to P170 at the Zamboanga Public Market.
Zamboanga City is the main source of chicken for the nearby island provinces of Basilan and Sulu, Muslim- dominated areas where residents traditionally hold grand Eid’l Fitr celebrations.
The city mainly gets its supply from Cagayan de Oro, aside from poultry farms within the area.
