BuCor orders dismantling of ‘kubols’ in PH prisons

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 19) — Bureau of Corrections chief Gen. Gregorio Catapang on Saturday ordered inmates to dismantle their kubols or makeshift dividers inside prison facilities.

\”We need to do this so that we can confiscate contrabands still in possession of PDLs (persons deprived of liberty),” said Catapang in a statement.

\”They are fully aware that we have given them chances to surrender all their contrabands but if they still refuse and they are caught red handed, I’m sorry to say that they will have to stay longer at NBP (New Bilibid Prison) as we will not hesitate to file charges against them,\” he added.

The makeshift dividers are usually made of plywood and are constructed by the inmates themselves to have privacy and provide additional space to others.

Catapang explained that these kubols \”are not the luxury kubols that we have seen during the past administrations that were occupied only by moneyed PDLs.\”

BuCor warned that personnel from the Diversified Maintenance Unit will tear down remaining kubols starting Monday, Aug. 21.
