Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 14) — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Monday said it would study the proposal of several transport groups to raise public utility jeepney fares by ₱2 in light of recent increases in oil prices.
“There are many factors to consider when reviewing fare hike petitions or requests. These factors should have to be carefully studied, reviewed and validated by the Board before we can allow any fare hikes. We understand the urgency of the situation and that is why the Board will convene to determine if the fare hike request has merit,” LTFRB chair Teofilo Guadiz III said.
Last week, groups Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas, Pagkakaisa ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide, Stop & Go Transport Coalition Incorporated, and The Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines gave a letter to Guadiz about their request for a ₱2 fare increase for all public utility vehicles nationwide.
The requested fare hike would cover the first four kilometers as the groups said fuel products have become “uncontrollable in surge of prices every week.”Oil companies announced on Monday that per liter prices of diesel will go up by ₱1.50, and gasoline will cost ₱1.90 more starting Aug. 15 — the sixth consecutive week of oil price increases since July 17.
