Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 24) – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the government is recalibrating the Kindergarten to Grade 10 (K-10) curriculum to keep it at par with international standards.

“Literacy and numeracy skills need to be strengthened,” the president said during his State of the Nation address on Monday.

“The virtue of good citizenship and sense of community are also now integrated into our curriculum,” he added.

On July 11, education spokesperson Michael Poa said the agency has completed the review of the K-10 curriculum, with the updated version expected to be out in a few weeks.

Poa said the revised curriculum targets to “decongest” the educational process to improve the quality of basic education.

Marcos said the government will continue to exhaust efforts to “keep young people away from the sinister influences in the dark corners of society.” He did not elaborate.

The president also highlighted the effectiveness of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs.

“TVET continues to prove itself to be an empowering educational intervention. There are many examples of how its graduates have gone on to secure competitive technical jobs,” he said.

Marcos said more than a million Filipinos graduated from TVET, a third of whom were Technical Education And Skills Development Authority scholars.

Last month, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers gave the Marcos administration a failing mark in addressing education issues.
