Possible new typhoon in LPA east of Visayas – PAGASA

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 5) – A low pressure area (LPA) east of the Visayas could intensify into a typhoon in the coming days, the state weather bureau said on Monday, even as monsoon rains drench southern Luzon.

“Itong low pressure area ay may posibilidad na maging bagyo sa susunod na 24 hanggang 48 hours,” Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said

The LPA was spotted 1,000 kilometers east of the Visayas at 3 p.m. and was forecast to approach Northern Luzon, PAGASA said in its 4 p.m. bulletin.

It said a new typhoon will be named “Chedeng.”

The storm will be the third to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this year and the first for June, days after Super Typhoon “Betty” left the country.

The name Chedeng was last used for a tropical depression that entered the country’s weather monitoring area in 2019 and affected large areas in Mindanao.

Meanwhile, Aurelio said the southwest monsoon will continue to bring rains over the western part of Southern Luzon.
