Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 4) — After three weeks of joint drills for the first phase of Salaknib exercise, the Philippine Army maintains the country is not in conflict with anyone, but it should always be prepared.
“We don’t want to have any conflict against anyone. But nevertheless, we should always be prepared should there be one,” Philippine Army Major General Audrey Pasia said at the closing ceremonies of the joint exercise.
The Philippine Army and the US Pacific Troops are taking a break for the Holy Week before the next phase of the Salaknib exercise begins.
A sizeable number of American troops are staying in the country with some recreation on the side.
“Over the next week, we’ll be doing a combination of preparation for the next phase, but we will also be seeking an opportunity to take in some of the beautiful culture and hospitality that the Philippines has to offer,” US Army Pacific Col. Michael Van Welie said at the ceremonies.
The Philippine Army said it will be offering guides and security for the troops who will take a tour of the country.
As Salaknib closes, preparations are in full swing for the biggest Balikatan exercise to date, which is set to start next week.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines said there will be around 17,600 personnel from both countries, including some 12,000 from the United States.
Air and sea ports, including those in Subic have been busy for days to accommodate US planes and ships.
