New PNP chief vows ‘aggressive’ fight vs. crime

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 25) — The Philippine National Police (PNP) will be “aggressive” in its campaign against crime, newly installed chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said on Tuesday after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on the organization to remain “formidable.”

In his first press conference, Acorda also told reporters that the PNP will continue focusing on its fight against illegal drugs, insurgency, terrorism, and \”scalawags\” within its ranks.

The new PNP chief also vowed proper support for regional offices—citing his experience as former director of the Northern Mindanao police. He said this includes ensuring they receive adequate funding and logistics assistance.

\”We will make sure that they will be properly supported on the ground kasi alam niyo naman, galing po tayo sa baba. Naging chief of (regional) police tayo, so I know what is the feeling of being a chief of (regional) police,\” he explained.

[Translation: We will make sure they will be properly supported on the ground because as you know, I also came from there. I served as chief of regional police, so I know the feeling.]

Before being appointed by Marcos, Acorda also led the PNP’s Directorate for Intelligence.
