Metro Manila, Philippines – President Bongbong Marcos on Sunday, May 10, said the fire at the Navotas landfill has been extinguished.
In a Facebook post, the president highlighted the continued efforts of firefighters, local government units, environmental teams, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and the Department of Transportation in responding to the fire.
He also acknowledged the private sector in extending assistance to help address the safety and welfare of people near the affected area.
Marcos likewise underscored the technical assistance and support provided by the Japanese government.
“Ngunit hindi dito nagtatapos ang ating trabaho [But the work doesn’t end here],” Marcos said, directing concerned agencies to continue monitoring the landfill through air and water quality testing, as well as thermal scanning, to ensure that no hotspots remain that could trigger another fire.
He said health monitoring would also be conducted for residents and responders.
“Ang pinakamahalaga ngayon ay masigurong ligtas ang ating mga kababayan at tuluyang makabalik sa normal ang mga komunidad sa paligid ng Navotas,” he added.
