Filipinos in Sudan urged to stay home amid temporary ceasefire

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 22) – Despite a 72-hour truce, Filipinos in Sudan were advised to stay home as gunfire and bombings persist in nearby areas, the Philippine Embassy in Egypt announced Friday.

“We kindly ask you to remain in your home, away from windows and rooftops,\” the advisory read. \”Stay at the lower levels of your shelter.\”
People should go out only if necessary, such as when replenishing food and water supplies, it added..
According to the embassy, air evacuation is currently not an option as airports in Sudan have been closed since April 15.
“Our Philippine Consulate in Khartoum is also stranded and currently cannot provide consular and Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) services,” it said.
“The Consulate is currently working on ways to secure food and water and other supplies for delivery or pickup,” it also said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs on Friday said a Filipino was among civilians injured in Sudan amid fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary group.

The agency said they have received 86 repatriation requests from Filipinos in the North African country.

Based on the latest data gathered by the Philippine Embassy in Cairo, there are approximately 400 Filipinos in Sudan.
