CNN Philippines, December 7) — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said its maritime sector will remain on high alert during the holiday season until Jan. 8 next year to prepare for the expected influx of passengers in seaport terminals and to ensure “zero maritime incidents.”
DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista said in speech at a Philippine Coast Guard event on Thursday that he was informed by PCG Commandant Ronnie Gil Gavan of the stiffer safety measures to be implemented in coast guard districts in the coming weeks.
\”I was briefed by Admiral Gavan that he has given the directives for Coast Guard Districts to implement proactive measures, including intensified intelligence operations, stricter pre-departure inspections onboard passenger and cargo vessels, 24/7 K9 paneling within the port vicinity, additional sea marshal deployment, and expanded coastal security patrols,\” Bautista said.
Aside from heightened alert in seaports, the DOTr chief said maritime vessels and air assets will also be prepared for possible deployment.
According to Bautista, 15 PCG districts remain on high alert since November, as they strengthen their \”presence and visibility\” along with the Philippine Ports Authority and Maritime Industry Authority.
He reminded commanders from districts, stations, and substations to regularly coordinate with other maritime and law enforcement authorities.
He added that they will put \”Malasakit Help Desks\” in seaports to accommodate passengers with medical needs.
