Slain radioman received no death threats, local police say

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 7) — Misamis Occidental police on Tuesday said radio broadcaster Juan Jumalon did not receive any threats to his life before he was shot dead on Sunday.

“There were no reports that indicate that prior to the incident he received threatening information,” acting Misamis Occidental police chief Dwight Monato told CNN Philippines’ The Source.

Also known as DJ Johnny Walker, Jumalon was shot in the head by an unidentified gunman while airing live in his home in Barangay Don Bernardo A. Neri in Calamba town at 5:35 a.m.
A reward of ₱100,000 is being offered to anyone who can provide information on those behind the fatal killing of Jumalon, the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) said in a statement on Tuesday.
Authorities on Monday released the composite sketch of one of the two accomplices, who have yet to be identified, based on accounts from the two witnesses and CCTV footage.

Monato said they still need to enhance the videos they acquired inside and outside of the victim’s house in order to come up with the sketches of the remaining assailants.

Authorities are considering all angles, but they are leaning more on personal motive, according to Monato.

He confirmed that the radioman had been dealing with a land dispute that has reached the court.

The victim’s family as well as the witnesses are already under police protection to ensure their security and full cooperation, Monato said.
