Metro Manila, Philippines – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. swore in former Interior secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento as presidential adviser on peace, reconciliation and unity on Wednesday, April 22.
Sarmiento replaces Carlito Galvez Jr., who stepped down from the post to spend more time with family.
In a statement, Malacanang said the new peace adviser will lead efforts to advance peace initiatives, strengthen partnerships with stakeholders, and sustain programs in conflict-affected communities, Malacañang said.
Sarmiento was Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government under President Benigno Aquino III from 2015 to 2016.
He was also a representative of Samar’s 1st District from 2010 to 2015 and mayor of Calbayog City for three terms from 2001 to 2010.
Malacañang said Sarmiento brings extensive experience in governance and public service, and is currently chairperson of the Galing Pook Foundation.
The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity oversees the comprehensive peace process and was expanded in 2021 to include national reconciliation and unity efforts.
