Japan hands over coastal radar systems to PH  under security aid program

L-R Defense Secretary Gibo Teodoro, Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya

Metro Manila, Philippines – Japan handed over coastal radar systems to the Philippines on Wednesday, Feb. 11, in a ceremony attended by Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya and Defense Secretary Gibo Teodoro, marking a milestone in growing security cooperation between the two countries.

The radar systems were provided through Japan’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) program following an agreement signed during then-Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s visit to Manila in November 2023.

The ¥600-million grant (around ₱228.6 million) is the first OSA project for the country in support of  the navy modernization efforts.

In remarks during the ceremony, Kazuya said the equipment is expected to improve coastal surveillance and maritime domain awareness capabilities, contributing to regional stability in the Indo-Pacific. He also welcomed what he described as the steady deepening of bilateral security ties.

Teodoro expressed appreciation for Japan’s support, saying the assistance strengthens the Armed Forces of the Philippines as it upgrades its defense capabilities. He added that Manila remains committed to maintaining close coordination with Tokyo in the security sector.

The OSA framework provides grant-based equipment, supplies and infrastructure assistance to the armed forces and related agencies of partner countries.

The program aims to enhance deterrence and security cooperation while contributing to international peace and stability, said Japanese officials.
