Netflix Philippines expands Filipino originals, partnerships

Netflix Philippines launched What Next event in Taguig City

Metro Manila, Philippines – Netflix Philippines offers its most ambitious local slate this year, expanding its lineup of Filipino originals and partnerships with major broadcast networks.

The streaming service said this reflects a shift toward larger-scale productions, bolder creative choices and stories rooted in Filipino culture, as demand for local content continues to grow. More than 90% of Netflix members in the Philippines watched Filipino titles last year, the company said during its “What Next” event in Taguig City.

What began as a platform primarily showcasing international content has evolved into a space where Filipino creators develop original projects with global reach.

A number of locally produced titles have found success both at home and abroad, including “Doll House,” “Lolo and the Kid,” “Outside,” and “Kontrabida Academy.” Thirty-two Filipino titles have appeared on Netflix’s Global Top 10 lists.

Netflix has also strengthened its reach in the local industry through partnerships with free-to-air networks.

“We are excited to continue growing alongside the industry, strengthening partnerships, and supporting more ambitious ideas from script to screen,” said Vitto Lazatin, Netflix content lead for the Philippines and director of content licensing for Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

He said the company is focused on bringing Filipino stories to a global audience.

Netflix Philippines will debut this year five original productions for the first time in a single year- three series and two films marking a significant increase in scale.

Among the most anticipated releases is “BuyBust: The Undesirables,” a dystopian action series that expands the 2018 film into a full-length television project. The series stars Anne Curtis and is directed by Erik Matti, featuring large ensemble casts and the platform’s most ambitious local production to date.

Also on the slate is “Balaraw,” an atmospheric horror-mystery series inspired by folklore and directed by Rae Red. The series blends ensemble storytelling with suspense and supernatural elements rooted in local tradition.

Netflix is also adding a young adult romance film, “18th Rose,” centered on first love and starring Xyriel Manabat and Kyle Echarri. Family drama “Ganito, Ganyan, Ganoon” stars Jodi Sta. Maria in a story that explores the humor and complexity of family life.

Completing the lineup is “Paskong Pinoy,” a holiday-themed anthology that revisits classic Christmas stories of love, nostalgia and second chances.

Two additional series will be released in partnership with broadcasters and will premiere on Netflix three days ahead of their free-to-air television debuts.

GMA’s “The Master Cutter” stars Dingdong Dantes as a former scout ranger leading a double life as a tailor and bounty hunter. ABS-CBN’s “Someone, Someday” follows a woman who creates a dating app for women while confronting her own past, starring Kathryn Bernardo and James Reid, with Maja Salvador.
