PH calls for end to humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Metro Manila, Philippines – The Philippines joined the international community in calling for an immediate end to the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, as the Israeli military pounded the war-weary city.

In a statement released Monday, Aug. 25, the Department of Foreign Affairs expressed deep concern over Israel’s planned full military takeover of Gaza, restrictions on humanitarian aid, widespread displacement, and attacks affecting civilians.

The DFA also cited reports of settlement expansion in the West Bank as aggravating tensions and undermining prospects for peace.

“These developments aggravate an already dire humanitarian situation and further diminish prospects for a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East,” the statement read, urging Israel to consider a ceasefire to protect civilians.“We strongly urge Israel to heed the ceasefire proposal immediately, as a crucial step to protect civilians and revive the path toward peace,” the DFA said. The call comes amid escalating violence in Gaza. According to Reuters, Israeli planes and tanks pounded the eastern and northern outskirts of Gaza City overnight Saturday, destroying buildings and homes. Residents in areas including Zeitoun, Shejaia, Sabra, and Jabalia reported non-stop explosions, while fires lit the skies and thousands fled amid fear and uncertainty.Israel’s military said operations in Jabalia were aimed at dismantling militant tunnels and preventing Hamas from returning. Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Gaza could be razed unless Hamas complies with Israel’s conditions. Hamas, in turn, said Israel’s planned offensive demonstrates a lack of seriousness about a ceasefire, calling for negotiations to release hostages and halt hostilities.
