‘Aghon’ devastates parts of PH

Metro Manila, Philippines – Typhoon Aghon, the first tropical cyclone to hit the country this year, battered parts of Luzon and the Visayas as it goes on an exit path.

In some provinces, roads were submerged with waist-deep water, trees and electricity posts were toppled, and some areas encountered landslides.

Based on National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council data on Monday, May 27, flooding hit parts of Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) and Eastern Visayas over the weekend, but have subsided.

Residents of Quezon province waded through flooded streets. Officials in Lucena City have declared a state of calamity.

Seven people from the Bicol Region were injured.

The typhoon affected more than 8,000 families, including 600 now in evacuation centers.

Government agencies have yet to report on damage to agriculture, housing, and infrastructure.
