Five Filipinos among passengers in accident-hit Singapore Airlines flight

Metro Manila, Philippines — Five Filipinos were among passengers on board a Singapore Airlines flight that encountered a medical emergency.

The pilot of flight SQ-321, bound for Singapore from London, diverted the aircraft to Bangkok, Thailand after it went through severe turbulence over Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar, 10 hours into its flight.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Wednesday, March 22, expressed concern on the condition of the Filipino passengers.

“The DMW’s Migrant Workers Office in Singapore is working closely with the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport authorities, and airline officials to determine the five Filipino passengers’ status and condition,” it said in a statement.

According to Singapore Airlines, Boeing 777-300ER carried over 200 passengers and 18 crew members.

One passenger died while the injured were brought to a hospital.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident, and are committed to providing all necessary support and assistance to the passengers and crew members who were on board SQ321, as well as their families and loved ones,” Singapore Airlines Chief Executive Officer Goh Choon Phong said.

He added: “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the passengers who passed away.”
