DMW activates hotlines in Japan amid tsunami warning

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 1) — Hotlines for assistance have been activated for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families in Japan amid the threat of a tsunami caused by the 7.6 magnitude quake that hit the country, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Monday.

In an advisory, DMW said the helpline is also open for calls from outside Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning along coastal regions of western Japan after the recorded 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck at 4:10 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

According to the United States Geological Survey and the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake had a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), 42 kilometers northeast of Anamizu in Ishikawa prefecture.

Hokuriku Electric Power said more than 32,500 homes in the area are without power after the big jolt.
