Signal No. 1 raised as LPA east of Davao develops into TD Ada

Metro Manila, Philippines – Some areas in Mindanao are under Signal No. 1 as the low pressure area monitored east of Davao has developed into Tropical Depression Ada on Wednesday, Jan. 14, state meteorologists said.

In its first bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said “Ada” was last located 635 kilometers (km) east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

The TD packs maximum sustained winds of 45 km per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph, moving northwestward at 35 kph.

Signal No. 1 is raised over Northern Samar, Samar, and Eastern Samar in Visayas and Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur in Mindanao.

PAGASA said the highest wind signal that may be hoisted throughout the passage of “Ada” is Signal No. 2.

The TD is expected to intensify into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours and is forecast to move west northwestward over the next three days.

PAGASA said Ada will “pass close or make landfall” over Eastern Visayas on Friday or Saturday, Jan. 16 or 17.

It will then pass close or make landfall over Catanduanes over the weekend before turning generally northeastward over the sea east of Luzon.

“Ada” is the first storm to enter the country this year.
