Talks underway on possible Miss Universe purchase – Chavit Singson

Metro Manila, Philippines – Businessman and former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson said Monday, Dec. 22, that he and his daughter are discussing a potential acquisition of the Miss Universe Organization, as the group faced controversies that hounded the most recent competition

Singson confirmed in a press briefing  that he is scheduled to meet in January with former Miss Universe executives Paula Shugart and Shawn McClain during a visit to the country. He said the discussions are part of his renewed interest in buying the global beauty competition.

The businessman cited damage to the pageant’s credibility after this year’s competition in Bangkok, Thailand, which was marred by disputes and allegations that involved organizers and officials. Mexico’s Fatima Bosch won the crown, while the Philippines’ Ahtisa Manalo was third runner-up.

Singson said his interest in acquiring the pageant is not driven by profit, adding he is prepared to absorb losses if the move would benefit the country’s image. He also expressed hope that Shugart would help run the organization, citing her long experience in managing the pageant.
