SWS: 6 in 10 Pinoys approve of death penalty bill

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 26) — Majority of Filipinos favor the reimposition of death penalty for heinous crimes related to illegal drugs — as currently being proposed by the House of Representatives.

The latest result of a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed that 61% of the respondents approved of the capital punishment bill, with higher approval coming from those more knowledgeable about it.

The poll, taken from March 25-28, also said almost half of the respondents (48%) had either extensive or partial but sufficient knowledge about the proposed measure.

The resulting net approval was a “good” +38 to bring back death punishment.

Knowledge of the proposal was highest in Metro Manila (54%). On the other hand, those with either only a little knowledge or almost no knowledge at all about the matter was highest in Mindanao (63%).

Meanwhile, those belonging to class ABC were most aware of the pending measure (65%), followed by those in class D (49%) and class E (35%).
