Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 10) — Palm Sunday kicked off in the Philippines with some government officials sending their message to Filipinos.
As Lenten Season began, some politicians took the Holy Week as an opportunity to call for peace in the country, while others appealed for Filipinos to reflect on the state of the nation.
In a statement Malacañang extended its well-wishes to Filipinos, hoping for a “quiet and renewing week” for all.
“May it be a time of spiritual renewal to strengthen genuine love and deep compassion for fellow Filipinos; and lead us to renew our unjust social structures – so that many who have been deprived of their dreams can lead rewarding and productive lives,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.
Senator Leila De Lima, who celebrated Palm Sunday with guests in her room in Camp Crame, meanwhile, said Filipinos should take it upon themselves to reflect on society and its state during the Lenten Season.
“Sa piling man ng pamilya o kung tayo man ngayon ay nag-iisa, magamit sana natin ang panahong ito upang huminto pansamantala, at makapagnilay sa ating buhay at sa mga nangyayari sa ating lipunan,” she said.

De Lima said Christians should consider if their actions are in line with God’s teachings, adding she prays the injustices claiming the lives of innocent people are put to an end.
“Patuloy po nating ipagdasal ang ating mga pinuno na magabayan sa tamang landas ng pamamahala, ang ating kapwa, lalo na ang mga biktima ng kawalang katarungan,” said De Lima.

Senator Sonny Angara, on the other hand, appealed for peace between feuding politicians this Holy Week.
“I am likewise making an appeal to our leaders and co-workers in government for a week-long political ceasefire,” he said.
Angara called for public officials to rise above their differences and act in the service of the country.
Angara said the Lenten season should be a time for forgiveness and reconciliation, as taught by Jesus.
“The Lenten season is an opportunity for us to give genuine forgiveness to those who have hurt us, as Jesus Himself prayed to the Father to forgive those who have caused Him sufferings,” he said.
Wishing everyone a safe Lent, the Senator also asked transportation officials to ensure the safety of motorists.
He asked police and traffic personnel to man roads and highways, and assist motorists in case of troubles and emergencies on the road.
