Duterte: Retired AFP chief to head DILG after a year

President Rodrigo Duterte (L) welcomes Lt. Gen. Eduardo Año as new Armed Forces chief.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 26) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday affirmed his decision to appoint retired Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Gen. Eduardo Año as the next Interior Secretary.

He may wait a little longer, however, before occupying the office because of the one-year ban. Republic Act 6975 or the Department of the Interior and Local Government Act of 1990, states  “no retired or resigned military officer or police official may be appointed as Secretary within one year from the date of his retirement or resignation.”

Duterte said Año, who retired on Thursday, could first be appointed undersecretary or a Special Assistant to the President.

“He will now supervise the Philippine National Police, together with (DILG officer in charge Catalino Cuy),” Duterte said.

“General Año, you’re always welcome to report. Maybe tomorrow, I will wait for you,” he told the retired general  who was among the crowd behind the podium.

Eastern Mindanao Command chief Lt. Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero replaced Año, who had reached the mandatory retirement age of 56.

Duterte mentioned in August he wanted Año as Interior Secretary after his retirement.

The President said Año steered the armed forces to maintain the nation’s security while gaining the trust of Filipinos.

“General Año took command of the AFP in December of last year. He was immediately beset with natural disaster that’s tested his leadership skills, proving his capability outside combat,” Duterte said.
