DOH reports 46 cases of firecracker-related injuries

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 29) — The Department of Health (DOH) says the number of fireworks-related injuries in the country has risen to 46, the same number logged during the same period last year.

In its latest report, the DOH said the cases were recorded from December 21 to 29.

The Health Department added the areas where the injuries were recorded were:

National Capital Region – 18

Region I – 5

Region II – 4

Calabarzon – 4

MIMAROPA – 1

Region V – 4

Region VI – 3

Region VII – 3

Region XI – 1

Regiona XII – 3

Of the cases recorded, one victim had an injury that required amputation. The victims’ ages ranged from two to 71 years old.

The DOH report said most of the injuries were due to piccolo, boga, 5-star, kwitis, and luces.

President Rodrigo Duterte has been pushing for a total ban on firecrackers. He signed Executive Order 28 in 2017 which limits the use of firecrackers in the country.

Meanwhile, Philippine National Police Spokesperson PBGen Bernard Banac told CNN Philippines Sunday they have already started disposing of seized illegal firecrackers.
