Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 2) — The House of Representatives approved on third reading a bill declaring late President Ferdinand Marcos’ birthday a special non-working holiday in Ilocos Norte.

Voting 197 to 9 with one abstention, lawmakers passed House Bill No. 7137 declaring every Sept. 11 as “President Ferdinand Edralin Marcos Day” in the northern province.

The bill was introduced by Ilocano representatives Angelo Marcos-Barba, Ria Christina Fariñas and Rudys Ceasar Fariñas.

The late dictator was born on Sept. 11, 1917 in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte. The lawyer and politician served in the House of Representatives and the Senate prior to being president of the Philippines from 1966 to 1986.

He was well-known for declaring Martial Law in the country, which was also in September.
