Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 30) — The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will install steel bollards along EDSA bus lanes to minimize accidents in the major highway.

MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia made the announcement on Thursday during the motu propio inquiry of the House Committee on Transportation on transportation policies under the post-enhanced community quarantine.

“Yung aming gagawin po, ilalagay natin is yung steel bollards, hindi yung plastic bollards para kahit papaano may konting proteksyon,” Garcia told the committee hearing.

[Translation: What we will do is install steel bollards, not the plastic ones, so that there’s protection.]

“Ito rin yung ginagamit sa Skyway (These are similar to the ones along Skyway),” he added. “This is donated by the private sector sa MMDA.”

According to Garcia, installation will start in August.

Meanwhile, concrete barriers will still be put up in the loading and unloading bays.

More concrete barriers are also scheduled for delivery and will be placed accordingly in the coming days, Transportation Assistant Secretary Steve Pastor said.

On Monday, another city bus has crashed into a concrete barrier along a dedicated bus lane on EDSA. This is the third incident recorded by the Department of Transportation since the project was launched.
