Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 7) — The modified number coding scheme for private and public vehicles will be suspended on Monday until further notice.
Metro Manila Development Authority spokesperson Celine Pialago made the announcement on Sunday, almost a week after Metro Manila was placed under the general community quarantine (GCQ).
“Sa ngayon ho hindi muna ii-implement and modified number coding scheme bukas, until further notice,” Pialago said in a statement.
[Translation: For the meantime, we will not implement the modified number coding scheme tomorrow, until further notice.]
Pialago cited the ongoing deployment for additional buses for stranded passengers, since the government eased quarantine rules.
“Marami pa rin po tayong mga kababayan na nahihirapang sumakay under GCQ…ayaw po muna nating bigyan ng dagdag isipin ang mga motorista, kasabay po nito ang pagkumpleto ng DOTr (Department of Transportation) and LTFRB (Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board) ng mga ruta na nangangailangan pa ng mga buses para ho sa mga stranded passengers,” she added.
[Translation: A lot of people are still having a hard time getting to their destinations under the GCQ…we don’t want motorists to add this to their burden, alongside the ongoing deployment of buses by the DOTr and the LTFRB to ferry stranded passengers.]
Under the modified number coding scheme, a private car that is coding on that day is allowed to ply the roads if it has two or more passengers, including the driver. On non-coding days, cars may be used freely.
The modification is in line with the MMDA Regulation No. 2020-001, Series of 2020, made by Metro Manila Mayors last May 26.
Health workers driving private vehicles are exempted from the scheme.
Social distancing and wearing of face masks must still be observed.
