Bacolod CIDG chief arrested for alleged extortion

(CNN Philippines, February 28) — Bacolod Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Chief Major Melvin Madrona was arrested by the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group and Special Action Force Wednesday for alleged extortion.

Madrona was nabbed in an entrapment operation in a cockpit arena at Hacienda Guanzon, Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

According to authorities, Madrona allegedly extorted money, hotel accommodation, airfare, and food allowance from a KTV restaurant owner in Bacolod City.

The CIDG chief, who only assumed the post a month ago, was allegedly asking for ₱10,000 per week from the complainant, who negotiated to lower it to ₱5,000.

Police said that Madrona denied the allegations, saying he did not ask any favor from the restaurant owner.

In 2017, Madrona went viral after being caught via CCTV camera, mauling a marine engineer in the Quezon City Police District Station 5 due to a traffic altercation. He was later relieved from his post as police chief inspector.

Authorities are now waiting for the order from the national headquarters for the transport of Madrona to Manila and for the filing of administrative charges against him.
