Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 31) – The total number of COVID-19 infections in the country nears the two-million mark on Tuesday, with 13,827 new infections reported by the Department of Health.
Cases among Filipinos abroad
The total case tally rose to 1,989,857, of which 145,662 or 7.3% are active cases. Of the currently ill, 95.9% exhibit mild symptoms, 1.4% are asymptomatic, 0.99% are moderate cases, 1.1% are severe, and 0.6% are critical.
The DOH explained that the relatively low number of infections reported on Tuesday was due to lower laboratory output last Aug. 29.
The Health department added that data from eight testing laboratories were not part of the count. They contribute around 0.9% of samples tested and 1.2% of positive individuals based on the agency’s data over the last two weeks.
The death toll is now at 33,448 with 118 more fatalities, including 37 earlier classified as recoveries. This is the fourteenth consecutive day the country has seen a triple-digit increase in deaths.
Meanwhile, total recoveries in the country breached the 1.8-million mark, with 16,759 new survivors for a total of 1,810,847.
These figures indicate that COVID-19 has killed 1.68% of all confirmed patients nationwide, while 91% have gotten well.
After final validation, the DOH said it deleted 172 duplicates from the total case count, where 153 were recoveries.
The positivity rate, or percentage of tested people with positive results, decreased to 25.4% based on 49,187 tests reported on Aug. 29. The rate has remained within critical level, or above 20% for 23 straight days, which calls for more testing.
Among overseas Filipinos, the Department of Foreign Affairs listed 193 new cases, two new fatalities, and 120 new recoveries over the past week.
The total number of infected is now at 22,906 while the death toll and the survivor count have reached 1,369 and 12,928, respectively.
The DFA said last week’s figures saw a slight increase in COVID-19 deaths (0.15%), survivors (0.94%), and those under treatment (0.83%).
The Americas is the only region that did not report any new cases among Filipinos in the last seven days, according to the DFA.
