Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 31) — State volcanologists on Tuesday reported a slight increase in Taal Volcano’s activity, with 52 volcanic earthquakes recorded in the past 24 hours.
On Sunday, 15 volcanic earthquakes were logged. The peak last week was 67 quakes.
Aside from volcanic quakes, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded plumes from the main crater that rose 2,000 meters high before drifting west.
Taal in Batangas province remains under Alert Level 2 of the five-step warning system.
The status means “sudden steam- or gas-driven explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within and around (Taal Volcano Island),” according to Phivolcs.
