Signal No. 1 still up over two areas as ‘Emong’ continues to move away from PH

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 5) — Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No.1 is still raised over Batanes and Babuyan Islands Tropical depression ‘Emong’ continues to move away from the country, the weather agency has reported.

At around 10 p.m. Monday, the storm was seen over the coastal waters of Itbayat, Batanes, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Emong was moving northwest at 40 kilometers per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

PAGASA said the weather system may bring light to moderate with at times heavy rains over areas where Signal No. 1 is raised. The agency also warned of possible isolated flash floss and rain-induced landslides, especially in high-risk areas.

Residents of these areas were warned of strong winds, although these would gradually weaken as Emong moves farther away, it added.

The weather bureau said Emong was forecast to leave the Philippine area early Tuesday but could intensify into a tropical storm before making a landfall over mainland China. It is then projected to “rapidly weaken into a remnant low.”
